Jewelry Care Guide
Your piece is crafted in 14K solid gold a precious metal that becomes more beautiful with wear.
Unlike plated or vermeil jewelry, solid gold will never tarnish, flake, or lose its color. With simple care, your jewelry will last a lifetime and beyond.
Every Sparkle Society piece is backed by our 120-day craftsmanship guarantee. If anything about your piece doesn’t meet your expectations, we’ll make it right.
Daily Wear
14K gold is designed for everyday wear. It’s one of the most durable precious metals strong enough for daily life, beautiful enough for any occasion.
A few simple habits to keep your pieces at their best:
- Put your jewelry on last. After perfume, lotion, sunscreen, and hairspray have been applied and absorbed. These products contain chemicals that can leave a film on gold and dull the surface of gemstones over time.
- Remove before water. Pools, hot tubs, and ocean water contain chlorine and salt that can weaken gold over time. Shower steam won’t damage your piece, but soap residue builds up gradually. The simplest rule: if you’re getting wet, take it off.
- Remove before exercise. Sweat is mildly acidic and can dull the finish over time. Impact activities (weights, climbing, sports) also risk bending or scratching. A quick remove and replace habit protects your piece with zero effort.
- Remove before cleaning with chemicals. Household cleaners, bleach, and solvents can react with gold and damage gemstone settings. If you’re using cleaning products, slip your rings off first.
- Chains and bracelets: remove before sleep. Delicate chains can tangle or catch during the night. Rings and studs are fine to wear overnight.
Cleaning Your Jewelry
The 30-second method (all you need):
Soak your piece in warm water with a small drop of mild dish soap for 20–30 seconds. Gently wipe with a soft cloth or brush lightly with a soft-bristled toothbrush around settings and crevices. Rinse under clean warm water. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
That’s it. This works for 14K gold, diamonds, and most gemstones.
What to avoid:
- Abrasive cloths, paper towels, or rough brushes. These can scratch gold unevenly.
- Toothpaste (a common myth) it’s abrasive and will micro-scratch your gold.
- Ultrasonic cleaners work well for diamonds but can loosen other gemstone settings. If your piece has multiple stone types, stick with the soap method.
- Chemical jewelry dips. these are designed for silver, not gold. They can damage gemstone coatings.
HOW OFTEN?
For pieces worn daily: clean every 2–4 weeks. You’ll notice the difference immediately, diamonds especially regain their full sparkle after a quick clean because they naturally attract oil from your skin.
Caring for Your Diamonds
Natural diamonds are the hardest material on earth, they won’t scratch from normal wear. But they do have specific care needs:
- Diamonds attract oil. Your skin’s natural oils transfer to diamonds every time you touch them, creating a film that reduces sparkle. This is why your diamond piece can look duller after a few weeks of wear, it’s not damaged, it just needs a quick clean.
- Diamonds can chip on hard impact. Despite being the hardest mineral, diamonds can chip or fracture if struck at the right angle. Avoid wearing diamond pieces during activities with impact risk (sports, moving furniture, heavy lifting).
- Check your settings. Gently wiggle each stone with your fingertip once a month. If any stone moves or feels loose, stop wearing the piece and contact us. We’ll address it under your craftsmanship guarantee.
- The soap-and-water method works perfectly for diamonds. The soft toothbrush is especially effective for getting behind and around diamond settings where oil builds up.
Caring for Gemstones
Different gemstones have different hardness levels and care requirements. Here’s a quick reference:
| STONE TYPE | HARDNESS | CARE NOTE |
| Diamond | 10/10 Hardest. Won’t scratch. | Attracts oil. Clean every 2–4 weeks. Can chip on impact. |
| Sapphire / Ruby | 9/10 Very hard. Daily wear safe. | Soap and water method works perfectly. Avoid ultrasonic. |
| Topaz / Aquamarine | 7–8/10 Good hardness. | Can be sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Avoid steam cleaners. |
| Opal / Pearl | 5–6/10 Softer. More delicate. | Avoid chemicals, prolonged water, and ultrasonic cleaners. Wipe gently with a damp cloth only. |
| Turquoise / Lapis | 5–6/10 Porous and soft. | Absorbs oils and chemicals. Never soak. Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. |

Storage
The golden rule: each piece in its own space.
Gold is a soft metal. When pieces are stored together, they scratch each other. Diamonds are even more problematic, they’ll scratch anything they touch, including other jewelry.
- Use the pouch your piece arrived in. Every Sparkle Society order includes a protective pouch. This is your best storage solution, soft, enclosed, and individual.
- If you own multiple pieces, store each one separately. A lined jewelry box with dividers works well. The key is that no two pieces touch each other.
- Store necklaces unclasped and flat to prevent tangling and kinking. Hanging storage works for chains but can stretch delicate links over time.
- Keep jewelry away from direct sunlight and heat. Prolonged exposure can affect some gemstones and cause gold to expand and contract, loosening settings over time.
- Avoid humidity. Bathrooms are the worst storage location. Temperature swings and moisture accelerate tarnish on any metal.
For Multi-Piece Collections
If you’re building a collection (and we love that you are), a few extra considerations:
- Layering necklaces: vary your chain lengths by at least 2 inches to prevent tangling while worn. When removing, unclasp each chain individually rather than pulling them apart.
- Stacking rings: remove before applying hand cream or sanitizer. These products get trapped between stacked rings and accelerate wear on the inner surfaces.
- Earring pairs: store together in the same pouch or compartment so you always know where both are. Studs can go in a small ziplock bag inside the pouch.
- Rotating pieces: wearing the same piece every day for years will show more wear than rotating between two or three. If you have multiple necklaces or bracelets, alternating extends the life of each.
When to Contact Us
Check your pieces periodically for:
- A stone that feels loose when gently wiggled with your fingertip
- A clasp that doesn’t close securely or feels different from when you received it
- A prong that catches on clothing (this means it may be lifting)
- Any visible damage, bending, or discoloration
